Map of Australia Travel Destination #2
Tasmania, Hobart, Port Arthur, Freycinet Peninsula Cradle Mountain
Hobart
Hobart should be your entry point to Tasmania if you only have a few days for your trip and want to see Port Arthur and come to grips with the Convict Heritage of Australia. It is a historic, maritime city with some great restaurants, and a wine industry that is world standard for its cool temperate climate whites and delicate reds.
Cradle Mountain and the Wilderness Rainforests
A bushwalkers paradise, the Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park is a World Heritage listed area that can be visited on the 3 Day Cradle Mountain Walking Expedition from Launceston. If you are on a tight schedule, then flying into Launceston, Devonport or Wynyard can put you in position to visit Cradle Mountain without the added three hours transit time from Hobart.
Port Arthur
Without doubt the best representation of the early Australian Convict System is to be found at the Port Arthur Historic Site, about one and a half hours drive from Hobart. If not driving yourself, it can be accessed on the Grand Historical Port Arthur Walking Tour from Hobart. A visit to Port Arthur can be part of your wider Tasmania Self Drive Holiday.
