Way up north and the gateway to Kakadu, Litchfield and the Tiwi Islands, Darwin has very definite wet and dry seasons. It is wet and hot in summer (December to April) and dry and cooler the rest of the year. You are up near the Equator, here, so it is warm to hot, even in the cooler months.
There is a great deal to see and experience, from the huge termite mounds of the Litchfield National Park, to the wide open Tropical Savanna of Kakadu and Arnhem Land.
Aboriginal rock art thousands of years old can be found in the area, and a day flight to Bathurst and Melville islands (the Tiwi Islands) take you to the northern tip of Australia. The Tiwi Island Aborigines are happy to share their way of life with visitors.
With the proper planning, trips out into the wild are perfectly safe as a self drive,
or you can arrange a driver/guide to really come to grips with the workings of the area. Air conditioning in vehicles is a must at all times of the year. In remote areas such as this, your choice of outfitter is very important.
Amazing birdlife, crocodiles, Aboriginal culture, lakes and waterfalls are all part of this region. Camping out is an option, but we would encourage careful research before taking this route. The wildlife up here is really wild!
