Stretching from the rugged red rocks and isolation of the Kimberleys in the north all the way to fine wine growing areas of Margaret River in the south, the State of West Australia is equivalent in size to about half the USA and all of Western Europe.
The city of Perth is a modern, bustling island on the land. The area to the south is a fast rising wine growing area and has some incredible coastal formations in the area of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
If self driving the area to the north of Perth, allow at least a week to work your way up the coast, visiting Cervantes, Geraldton, Kalbarri and Shark Bay (Monkey Mia). Heading further north to Exmouth brings you to the Ningaloo Reef, home of the Whale Shark. One of the great experiences of the world is to swim with these gentle monsters in the wild.
Local airlines service this area, and so it can be included in a shorter trip with the right planning.
Broome, the pearling capital of the world, the Kimberleys and the Bungle Bungles are one of the last great remote areas of the planet that are accessible either self driving or with a driver / guide.
