Darwin, Kakadu / Arnhem Land, Litchfield National Park
and The Tiwi Islands - A Custom Travel Planner's View

Darwin is the northernmost capital city of Australia - it is in the Tropics and, as such, has two major seasons - the "Wet" (November to April) and the "Dry" (May to October). During the "Wet" Season it experiences Monsoon rains and high humidity. Thunderstorms are common. In the "Dry" season, nearly every day is warm and sunny, with humidity around 30%. There is almost no rain between May and September.

The land covered by the Kakadu National Park has been occupied by the local Aboriginal people continuously for the last 40,000 years and is still a major center of Aboriginal culture. It is also home to the saltwater crocodile and a host of birdlife.

While Kakadu can be visited in a day trip from Darwin, it is far more relaxing to spend a night out at one of the excellent hotels in the area and to make it a two day trip. We have Small Group and Pirvate Driver/Guide options available for visiting the area. Self driving should be limited to the "Dry" season - great care and local experience is needed in the "Wet" season and we do not recommend self-drives at this time.

Litchfield National Park can be visited in a one day expedition from Darwin with a good Small Group Operator or a private Driver / Guide. Attractions include a number of spectacular waterfalls and swimming holes, though a number of these are accessible by 4 Wheel Drive operators only. The Magnetic Termite mounds for which the region is famous are built in a north-south direction to control the internal temperature for the thousands of termite inhabitants.

Bathurst and Melville Islands (the Tiwi Islands) are visited in a day trip by light plane. The remote location of these Island Aboriginal Communities makes for a fascinating look at the local culture.
