Sydney is a harbour city, and its situation fronting the huge expanse of sheltered water make it one of the most spectacular cities in the World. The Sydney Harbour stretches inland almost 25 Kilometers and is served with an excellent ferry system of commuter vessels that are used for getting around the inner Sydney city suburbs. Because of the broken topography of the central city, it is wise to use the public transport system to get around under your own steam. The is a wonderful city bus system, as well as the rail system linking the inland suburbs, rural New South Wales and the major cities of Australia: Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Cairns.

Sydney's Famous Beaches
If you widen the map view you will see the point at which the Sydney Harbour reaches the Ocean between North Head and Watsons Bay on the South Head. Manly Beach is to the north of the entrance to the harbour, and Bondi Beach is the first beach as you head south from Watsons Bay through the exclusive Sydney suburbs of Vaucluse, and Dover Heights. From Manly and Bondi, beachside suburbs stretch north and south for many Kilometres. To get to Manly, catch the Ferry from Circular Quay near the Sydney Opera House to Manly and walk the short distance though The Corso to the Beach, and to get to Bondi, take the train or bus to Bondi Junction, and then the bus service to Bondi Beach itself. It is a good idea to get a Sydney Sightseeing Pass: See Sydney Card and Attraction Pass if you are going to explore Sydney under your own steam using public transport.
Driving in Sydney itself is a bit of a waste of time - you will spend more time and money on parking and navigating than it is worth. If you want to get out of the city, however, there are some marvelous drives both north to the Hunter Valley and beyond, and south to Wollongong for some spectacular coastal scenery. Train is probably the best way to get to the Blue Mountains, though a Blue Mountains Nature and Wildlife Day Tour from Sydney is a great way to do it if you would like to join a tour for the day.
