Self Driving in Australia
The coast area between Sydney and Brisbane is very interesting and has many beautiful coastal towns along the route. It is well worth spending 5 or 6 days (or longer) to make the journey north from Sydney to Brisbane so you can turn off the main road to experience the small country towns and enjoy the many beaches along the coast. It is usually better to explore north of Brisbane on the ground, but then to return to Brisbane and fly on to The Whitsundays and Hamilton Island or to Cairns if you want to experience the Great Barrier Reef.

Driving out in the Red Center (Uluru, Alice Springs)is quite possible, but we strongly suggest you fly the three hours out to Alice Springs or Uluru (Ayers Rocka) and then rent your vehicle locally. The crossing of the Nullabor Plain all the way to Perth on the West Coast is not for the faint-hearted, but it can be a wonderful experience with the right planning.
