Travel Destination Hobart
Hobart, Capital City of Tasmania and Gateway to the Southeast
When you arrive into Hobart, the first thing you notice is the water and the Mountain. The city is spread along both sides of the Derwent River Estuary, and Mount Wellington dominates the skyline at 1270 M (4166 ft). Travel Destination Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania. Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia (after Sydney)) and has a population of over 210,000. When you get into the city, it is the well preserved and restored historic buildings of the wharf and Salamanca Place that provide the backdrop for a great holiday.
History of Hobart: In the early 1800’s, the authorities in Sydney were getting a bit worried about the visits of the French Explorers to Australia, and sent Lt. Col. Bowen with a party of convicts and free settlers to establish a colony. They arrived in 1803, and found an ideal location for a port city. The natural harbour at Hobart is rated as one of the best in the world. The new colony was named after Lord Hobart, and quickly became a centre for whaling, sealing, shipbuilding and commerce. Charles Darwin arrived in 1832 as part of his journey on HMS Beagle. He climbed Mount Wellington, and commented on the wildlife in his log. Hobart became a city in August of 1842.
Geography and Weather: Travel Destination Hobart spreads up both sides of the Derwent River for about 16 Km (10 Mi) north and south of the Downtown area and the Historic Wharf, Salamanca Place and Battery Point Historic Precincts. Mount Wellington forms a natural barrier to the west of Hobart, but it provides spectacular views of Southern Tasmania and some excellent walking and hiking on well maintained tracks. The climate of Travel Destination Hobart is a mild maritime climate – warm but not hot in summer, and cool, but not extremely cold in winter. In summer you can expect average high temperatures of 21 C (71 F) during the day, and average lows of 12 C (53 F) overnight. In winter, expect average highs of 12 C (53 F) during the day and average lows of 4 C (39 F) overnight. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year, with more falling during winter (June, July, August). Annual rainfall is 616 mm (24″). The standing joke about Hobart weather is that if you don’t like it now, just wait a hour or two and it is sure to change. Dress in layers of light but windproof clothing so you can always be prepared.
