History of Travel Destination Lamington National Park: Aboriginal occupation was at its peak 6,000 years ago, though evidence of campsites has been dated at 10,000 years. The first explorers of the area came before the timber cutters, and the great natural beauty of the area was recognized very early in the 1800’s.

In 1863 a survey was carried out to define the border between the then emerging States of Queensland and New South Wales.

During the 1890’s Robert Collins campaigned heavily for preservation of the are from logging, and in 1915 Travel Destination Lamington National Park became a protected area. It was named after Lord Lamington, Governor of Queensland between 1896 and 1902.

The same Lord Lamington gave his name to a unique form of Australian dessert: The Lamington Cake, or “Lammo” to the locals. Listed on the World Heritage Site Gondwana Rainforests of Australia in 1986, it was added to the Australian heritage List in 2007.
