When Colonel William Light settled Adelaide in 1836, it was to be a planned city of free Australian settlers. Today, with a population of some 1.3 million, it enjoys wonderful beaches to the west, the Adelaide Hills to the east and the wine area of the Barossa Valley to the north, while the Fleurieu Peninsula runs south all the way to Port Jervis and Kangaroo Island.

Adelaide is often rated as one of the world’s most livable cities: large enough to have good services, but still small enough to retain the pleasures of smaller city life. Often overlooked in an Australian trip, Adelaide and Kangaroo Island provide a chance to experience a wide range of different environments without the need to cover huge distances.

Wine, wildlife, scenery, small towns, interesting locals. Adelaide is well worth a few days.

What to Look for in Adelaide Hotels

Adelaide city was planned as a rectangle, bordered on three sides by expansive city parks, and on the fourth by the Torrens River. The downtown area is the place to stay for proximity to restaurants, though waterfront accommodation is available in the suburb of Glenelg, a short tram (streetcar) ride from Adelaide itself.

The Geographical heart of Adelaide is Victoria Square, but if staying in the downtown area, we suggest you select a hotel between Grote and Wakefield Streets and North Terrace. This will keep you within 5 blocks of the Adelaide Festival Centre and the Torrens River.

If you prefer beachfront accommodation, look in the Glenelg area, though you should be aware that Glenelg is a few kilometres from the center of Adelaide City. A kilometre or so to the north of the Adelaide Festival Centre and North Terrace, the upscale suburbs of North Adelaide are set among tree lined streets, and accommodation near King William Road will put you in the centre of this very desirable suburb.

The Adelaide Casino is set on North Terrace, and while you might not be into gambling and the like, the building in which it is housed is worth attention.  The old Adelaide Railway Station, a marvelous structure completed in 1928 and built of sandstone in a neoclassical style has been converted into the casino while retaining the space and grandeur of the original Railway Station building.

The Adelaide Casino was opened in December 1985, and is the only licensed casino in South Australia, as well as being Adelaide’s largest employer.

McLaren Vale Wine Area Panorama Adelaide Australia Hotels

McLaren Vale: This area is part of the Southern Vales, situated between the Adelaide Hills and the sea to the south of Adelaide. McLaren Vale is an interesting area producing robust reds and some excellent coastal style whites.

The McLaren Ridge Adelaide is a good base among the vines, while a far more budget option is to be found at the McLaren Vale Motel & Apartments. Whatever level of accommodation you settle on, the McLaren Vale area is worth spending time in if you are seriously interested in the winemaking process and the strong, gutsy Australian reds for which the area is famous.
