Affectionately known to Aussies as “The Alice”, Alice Springs is the major town for the Red Centre. Originally established to provide support and a way station for the Overland Telegraph in the 1800’s, it has grown into a tourism and regional centre, a destination in its own right. Zoom out on the Alice Springs Australian Travel Map to show you “The Alice” in relation to Uluru Ayers Rock. It takes about 5 hours to drive one way on the main, sealed road..

Getting to Alice Springs

It is only a 20 minute flight from Uluru Ayers Rock to Alice Springs, and about 3 hours to Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns from there. Not all flights to the Red Centre stop at Alice Springs, some going direct to Uluru Ayers Rock and back.

The Ghan Rail service stops at Alice Springs heading north from Adelaide and south from Darwin. The Ghan Train does not stop at Uluru Ayers Rock.  If using rail travel to get to the Red Centre, you will need to make other arrangements to get to Uluru.

Alice Springs Desert Park: Look to the left (west) of the Sturt Highway on the Alice Springs Australian Travel Map to find the Desert Park. This excellent preserve and park throws the ecology and wildlife of the Red Centre into focus.

Macdonnell Ranges: Zoom out on the Alice Springs Australian Travel Map and look to the left (west) for the West Macdonnell National Park. Great scenery and hiking in a mountainous desert environment.

Todd River: If you zoom in on the Alice Springs Australian Travel Map you will see that the dry Todd River bed runs north to south through the town. It is usually dry and sandy, only occasionally having any water after heavy rains. The Henley-on-Todd Regatta is held each year and draws big crowds for a day of fun watching a lighthearted spoof on a real yachting regatta. The crews stand inside the boats, lift the bottomless hulls, and race each other down the dry, sandy river. On odd occasions the Regatta has to be cancelled because there is actually water flowing in the Todd.
