Getting to Brisbane
Since the upgrade of the Brisbane Airport to International standard, Brisbane has become a major entry point for overseas visitors. From within Australia it is about one hour’s flying time from Sydney, one hour and forty minutes from Melbourne and about 3 hours from Cairns.
If you are driving up the coast to Brisbane from Sydney, take about 5 days and spend time in the interesting coastal towns on the way. The Sunlander Train runs from Cairns to Brisbane and takes about 32 hours for the journey. Zoom out on the Brisbane Australian Travel Map to get the trip from Cairns or Sydney into focus.
Downtown: Brisbane is a river city. It is not on the coast and does not have local beaches. The Great Barrier Reef starts at about Bundaberg, so do not make Brisbane your accommodation point if you want to see the Reef. Zoom out on the Brisbane Australian Travel Map to locate Bundaberg to the north of Fraser Island.
Mall: The Queen Street Mall (named after Queen Victoria) has become a focal point for the downtown area. It now includes the Albert Street section and Burnett lane to create a Queen Street mall precinct covering several city blocks of downtown. Zoom right in on Queen Street on the Brisbane Australian Travel Map for detail.
Botanical Gardens: Look on the end of the downtown area for Gardens Point on the Brisbane Australian Travel Map. This wonderful Botanic Gardens is a wonderful, relaxing area bounded on three sides by the Brisbane River.
