About an hour and a half’s drive to the north of Cairns city is the Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree Australian Travel Map shows Port Douglas in the bottom corner and how it relates to the Daintree. It is one of the oldest tropical ecosystems on the planet. This is where you can get up close to the Saltwater Crocodile, the most fearsome of Far North Queensland’s local residents. You can also get up close to an amazing variety of bird life, see the elusive, endangered Cassowary and peek at a Green Tree Frog.

Getting to Daintree

If you are driving yourself, it is a very picturesque road from Cairns north to Port Douglas. The road hugs the coast for much of the trip. At Port Douglas, it heads inland and runs through fields of sugar cane and patches of forest land. The road then swings inland along the Daintrree River and finishes at the Daintree Village.

Zoom in on the Daintree Australian Travel Map and look at where the road crosses the Daintree River. There is no bridge across the river. You will need to cross using the rope tow vehicle ferry. Sometimes the wait can be long, especially early in the morning as the first of the tours head north to Cape Tribulation.

Daintree National Park: Most of the Rainforest in the Daintree is old growth. It has not been logged or burned. The National Park and World Heritage status of the Daintree preserves the delicate and diverse ecosystem for the future. Care should be taken to stay on the boardwalks when in the rainforest.

Daintree Village: Situated right on the Daintree River, there are several shops and food outlets, as well as a nice restaurant, The Daintree Teahouse, just out of the Daintree Village.  It is a great place for lunch.

Cape Tribulation: Named for the trouble Captain Cook had in 1770 when he ran aground here.  Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest ecosystem meets the Great Barrier Reef. This is one of the few places in the world that this occurs. The beach at Cape Tribulation is magnificent.
