The Grampians National Park – Gariwerd – is about three hours drive to the west of Melbourne. Look at the Grampians Australian Travel Map for detail.  If driving yourself in a rental car, it is a good idea to take a cab or shuttle to the Melbourne Airport and hire the car there. You can swing south to the Great Ocean Road from the Grampians and can make a very pleasant 3 or 4 day trip of it.

Getting to The Grampians

From the Melbourne Airport take the M80 ring road south. Then take the Western Freeway towards Ballarat. If interested, stop off in Ballarat to visit the Sovereign Hill gold mining town reproduction. Zoom out on the Grampians Australian Travel Map to locate Ballarat.

Stay on the Western Highway after the end of the Motorway until you come to Ararat. At Ararat take the C222 Halls Gap – Ararat Road and cut through the farmlands to Halls Gap and the Grampians National Park.

Grampians Australian Travel Map

Grampians National Park Gariwerd: The Western Plains of Victoria around Ararat are flat, and stretch to the horizon in each direction. The Grampians National Park is a rocky outcrop that rises dramatically out of the plain to provide an excellent scenic area of great natural beauty.

Ararat: If you want to see a great example of an Australian country town, Ararat is it. Drive up the main street and stop at any of the local businesses to get a feel for Aussie life outside the big city.

Halls Gap: This is the point at which the road starts its steep climb up onto the escarpment of the Grampians. There is a lot of accommodation in Halls Gap, but it is worth the drive through the Park to the Wartook Valley to my favourite, Meringa Springs. Compare prices on accommodation in the area below. Make sure you keep a keen eye out for wild kangaroos on the road. The Grey Forester Kangaroos are in almost plague proportions. Watch for them on the road ahead and in the undergrowth beside the road, particularly early morning and at sundown.
