The Great Barrier Reef is immense: it stretches from the northern tip of Australia some 2,000 Kms (1,200 mi), past The Whitsundays and down to Bundaberg. Cairns is the gateway to the northern part of the Reef, and is also the access point for the World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforest of the Daintree National Park. Cairns: The regional centre for Far North Queensland. Look for it at the northern end of the Reef on the Great Barrier Reef Travel Destinations Map.

Daintree National Park: Touted as “the oldest rainforest on Earth”, the Daintree National Park Rainforest runs from the mountains to meet the Coral Sea near Cape Tribulation. It is to the north of Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef Travel Destinations Map. It takes about 2 hours to drive from Cairns to Daintree Village.

Port Douglas: To the north of Cairns on the Great Barrier Reef Travel Destinations Map. It will take about 1 hour 30 minutes to drive from Cairns. Great restaurants and one of the best golf courses in Far North Queensland.

Hamilton Island A 40 minute plane ride, or about 6 hours driving time south of Cairns. It has a major airport and is the access point for the Whitsundays.

The Whitsundays: A sailing person’s heaven. The many Islands in the Whitsundays always provide a lee shore for secluded, quiet overnights. Locate Airlie Beach on the Great Barrier Reef Travel Destinations Map. Then look for Whitehaven Beach as you zoom in or use the detail map.

Lady Elliot Island: At the southern end of the Reef – look for Bundaberg on the Great Barrier Reef Travel Destinations Map.  Lady Elliot Island is the top of a mountain poking out of the ocean about 50 Kms (35 mi) from shore. Unique wildlife and some of the best turtle viewing on the Reef and more seabirds than you thought existed on the planet. Reached by private short take off / landing aircraft. When you arrive on the Island you will see why.
