The Witsundays is a group of islands and channels in the middle section of the Great Barrier Reef. It is an area, rather than a distinct destination. The Whitdunday Islands National Park is on Whitsunday Island itself. Zoom out on the Whitsundays Australian Travel Map.

Getting to The Whitsundays

You can access the Whitsundays through Proserpine or Bowen on Hwy #1 Bruce Highway. To get to Airlie Beach, turn off the Bruce Highway onto Shute Harbour Road at Proserpine if coming north or at Gregory Cannon Valley Road if coming south. Zoom in on the Whitsundays Australian Travel Map for detail.

If flying from either Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns, make the destination Hamilton Island and catch a ferry to Airlie Beach. Rental cars and most yacht charters leave from Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach.

Sailing the Whitsundays: Because there are a lot of small, uninhabited islands, there is always a sheltered lee shore or a deserted beach to be found. You can either sail yourself on a bareboat charter (yes, they will want to know if you can actually sail), or you can set up a crewed charter where a skipper and crew will sail the boat, cook the food and generally look after you. This can make for a great family vacation. A shared charter is where you buy a berth on a sailing trip in much the same way you book a hotel room. If you want the adventure without the hassle or the expense of a crewed charter, this is the way to go.

Whitehaven Beach: One of the most dramatic beaches on the planet. Visit on a day sailing trip from Hamilton Island, or by helicopter or seaplane.
