The Great Ocean Road stretches from Torquay (just past Geelong to the southwest of Melbourne) to Warrnambool on the far lower left of the Great Ocean Road Australian Travel Map. The most spectacular part of the Road is the section between Lorne and Apollo Bay. The Twelve Apostles are nearer the Warrnambool end of the Great Ocean Road.

Getting to the Great Ocean Road

Allow about 4 hours to drive the road from Melbourne, then another 3 hours to get back via the inland. It can be a long day. Leave Melbourne on the M1 Princes Highway and follow it to Geelong. At Geelong take the C122 down to meet the coast at Torquay. Follow the Great Ocean Road to Lorne and then on to Apollo Bay. This is the most spectacular part of the Road.

After Apollo Bay, the road cuts inland around Cape Otway and then runs inland to Port Campbell National Park. This is where you will find the Loch Ard Gorge, the Shipwreck Coast and the Twelve Apostles.

I have suggested routing it this way because the water views are the best from the outside of the road heading south. For the return trip to Melbourne take the A1 Princes Highway for the fastest route unless you are going on to The Grampians.

Apollo Bay: About 160 kms (100 mi) from Melbourne, the coastal town of Apollo Bay is a great place to overnight along the way. Zoom in on the Great Ocean Road Australian Travel Map for a closer look at this beachfront township. Apollo Bay is just far enough from Melbourne to be an authentic Aussie Coastal Town.

Cape Otway National Park: The Cape Otway Lighthouse adjacent to the Park is considered one of the most significant in Australia. Stop off and walk the gullies of the Park and visit the Cape Otway Lighthouse to step back into the time when the whole area was only accessible by sea or by bush track.

The Twelve Apostles and the Shipwreck Coast: Try to get to this part of the Great Ocean Road before the crowds have arrived, or after they have left.
