Heron Island is a Sand Cay – an island formed by sand accumulating over coral where the Barrier Reef has grown to near the surface of the Coral Sea. Getting to Heron Island

Heron Island is 72 kms (45 mi) off the coast, just northeast of Gladstone. Flights from Sydney or Brisbane operate to Gladstone on a regular basis.

Once you are in Gladstone, you can get to Heron Island by either boat or helicopter. The Heron Islander is operated by the Resort, seats 170 people and makes the run to the Island and back once a day. It departs Heron Island at 2.00pm, and makes the return trip from Gladstone at 5.45 pm.

The Helicopter transfer will give you a spectacular view of the Great Barrier Reef and the Coral Sea. There is a luggage restriction of 15 Kg (33 lb) per person and you will also need to declare body weight of passengers when booking.

Resort Facilities: Staying at the Heron Island Resort is meant to be a nature experience. There is no television, and no mobile phone reception. Just nature, time with your partner or your family, and the wide expanse of the Coral Sea. There are 109 rooms, each with balcony and ceiling fan. A bar, restaurant and an abundance of wildlife complete the picture.

Activities on Heron Island: The snorkeling is easy and amazing. There are over 20 dive sites within minutes of the Resort, and in nesting season (October to March) there will be more seabirds than you thought possible. Turtles hatch on Heron Island and it is possible to see the hatchlings make their way to the ocean from the Beachside Suites.
