Getting to Kings Canyon

The main feature is the Watarrka National Park, covering the Kings Canyon area. It is about 3 hours drive from Uluru Ayers Rock on a good sealed road. You can either stay overnight at the Kings Canyon Resort, or take a day trip from Uluru. It is not advisable to try and visit Kings Canyon in a day trip from Alice Springs.

Kings Canyon Resort: The Resort is about 6 kms (4 mi) to the west of Kings Canyon just past where Larapinta Drive becomes Red Centre Way. Zoom out two clicks on the Kings Canyon Australian Travel Map to find the roads. There are different levels of accommodation available.

Walking in Kings Canyon: There are three major walks in the Canyon. The easiest is the Kings Creek walk along the bottom of the Canyon. It takes 3 – 4 hours to complete the Canyon Rim walk, and this includes some steep climbing and a chance to visit a genuine desert oasis, the Garden of Eden. The longer Giles Track to Kathleen Springs is 22 kms (14 mi) long and should not be attempted on a casual basis.

The Garden of Eden: This permanent waterhole in the centre of Australia provides a lush oasis of greenery in the middle of thousands of square kilometres of red desert. You can visit as part of the Canyon Rim Loop walk.
