In a complete contrast to the beaches and water sports of the coastal areas, the Lamington National Park is an oasis of sub-tropical flora and fauna just two hours drive from Brisbane City. It is inland from the Gold Coast, straddling the New South Wales / Queensland border. Check the Lamington Australian Travel Map for detail.

Getting to Lamington National Park

Driving from Brisbane, take the M1 Pacific Motorway south to Nerang. At Nerang, turn right (west) and head inland towards Canungra. At Canungra you are going to take a ridge road all the way into Lamington National Park and O’Reilley’s. This ridge road is one of the most spectacular drives in Australia in my opinion. If you take it on a bus as part of a tour it is well worth doing.

If driving from the Gold Coast, head inland from Southport, south a little way on the M1, and then turn inland at Nerang to follow the road through Canungra.

Lamington National Park: Lamington is one of the oldest National Parks in Australia. It is well preserved, and the O’Reilley’s facilities were in place before the Park was declared. It is one of the few National Parks where the access road takes you right inside the Park itself, and not just to the outer edges.

Birds and Wildlife: The birdlife in the Lamington National Park is spectacular. It ranges from colourful parrots to the Golden Bowerbird. Full birding lists are available at the Visitor Centre at O’Reilley’s. Wallabies are everywhere, and if you are lucky, you will see shy Aussie animals like the Feathertailed Glider, a flying possum that is very small.

Walking Trails and Treetop Walkways: The walking trails and the tree top aerial walkway at O’Reilley’s are excellent. If staying at O’Reilley’s (I highly recommend it if you have time), you will get to really feel the Australian bush as it settles down for the night at sundown, or starts its day with the sunrise. This is a unique eco-experience of the first order.
