Hobart: Capital city of Tasmania. Look in the lower left hand corner of the Tasmania Travel Destinations Map. For a short trip you will probably want to fly into Hobart, and also leave from there. Hobart should be your entry point to Tasmania if you only have a few days for your trip and want to see Port Arthur and come to grips with the Convict Heritage of Australia. It is a historic, maritime city with some great restaurants, and a wine industry that is of world class standard for its cool temperate climate whites and delicate reds.

Port Arthur: About an hour and 30 minutes drive from Hobart. It is on the Tasman Peninsula to the south and east of Hobart. Without doubt the best representation of the early Australian Convict System is to be found at the Port Arthur Historic Site, about one and a half hours drive from Hobart.  If not driving yourself, it can be accessed on the Grand Historical Port Arthur Walking Tour from Hobart.

Freycinet National Park: On the East Coast, about two hours drive from Hobart, and two hours drive from Launceston. Wonderful coastal scenery.

Launceston: Second largest city in Tasmania. It takes about two hours to drive through the Midlands on Highway #1.  It is about 4 hours drive up the East Coast and about 10 hours drive via Strahan. Check the distances on the Tasmania Travel Destinations Map.

Cradle Mountain: From Launceston look south and west. Cradle Mountain is near the large word Tasmania near the middle of the map. It takes about 5 hours to drive to from Hobart Airport and about 2 1/2 hours from Launceston Airport. A bushwalkers paradise, the Cradle Mountain – Lake St Clair National Park is a World Heritage listed area. If you are on a tight schedule, then flying into Launceston, Devonport or Wynyard can put you in position to visit Cradle Mountain without the added three hours transit time from Hobart.

Strahan and the Gordon River: Look to the West Coast. Allow 6 hours to drive from Hobart, and 5 hours  from Launceston. I strongly suggest you stay over at least one night if driving over. Check the distances on the Tasmania Travel Destinations Map.
