Getting to Darwin

The Darwin International Airport is close to the city. It is about 3 hours flying time from Uluru Ayers Rock and Cairns. It is about about 5 hours from Sydney, and 6 hours from Melbourne.

The Ghan Rail Service runs right up the middle of Australia. It will take you from the temperate South Australian capital, Adelaide to the tropical climate of Darwin in three days and two nights.

If you are really keen and want to drive some of the wildest and most remote roads in the world, allow three days to get from Adelaide to Alice Springs, and then another 3 days to get from Alice Springs to Darwin. The road follows very much the same route as the Ghan Rail Service. Not a drive for the fainthearted. Follow the route by zooming out on the Darwin Australian Travel Map.

Darwin City: Zoom in on Darwin downtown on the Darwin Australian Travel Map. The Esplanade runs between the buildings and Bicentennial Park. The downtown area is directly inland from the Esplanade.

Seasons in the Top end: This is the full blown tropics – a very rainy wet season (November – April) and a clear and sunny dry season (May – October). Cyclones (hurricanes) can be a feature of the wet season. If you have a choice, the dry season is by far the best time of the year to visit Darwin and the Top End.

Litchfield National Park: As a contrast to the wetlands of Kakadu, the Litchfield National Park with its Magnetic Termite Mounds can be found by zooming out about 5 clicks on the Darwin Australian Travel Map.
