McLaren Vale Wineries: This region has long been regarded as a specialist red wine area, producing strong, robust reds which were believed by 19th century doctors in England to have great medicinal and restorative powers. Since the mid 1970’s, however, the region has shown its ability to produce quality Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Willunga, Victor Harbor and Country Towns: Look at the McLaren Vale Australian Travel Map. To the south of McLaren Vale is the town of Willunga. This township is well preserved and has some interesting local restaurants. By staying on the A13 south you come to the coast at Victor Harbour. This historic coastal town is about 80 kms (50 mi) from Adelaide and is an old 1800’s whaling town. The name of the town defies usual Australian Spelling in that there is no “u” in Harbor as in other most names throughout the country. This was the result of a spelling error by an early Surveyor General of South Australia in the 1920’s when the name was changed from Port Victor.
