History and Geopgraphy: Travel Destination Daintree has one of the oldest ecosystems on earth and has been home for Aboriginal Peoples for at least 30,000 years. Captain James cook ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef and punched a hole in the bottom of HMS Endeavour in 1770.

After much work, he and the crew repaired the ship and sailed on, but not before aptly naming the nearby point Cape Tribulation. In 1988 the whole area was designated a World Heritage by UNESCO to preserve it for future generations.

Many of the plants are direct descendants of ancient Gondwana ferns and palms, representing the greatest concentration of such plants in a natural habitat on Earth.

The Daintree is an area of mountains and gorges, fast flowing rivers and wide tracts of undisturbed rainforest. Where the Rainforest meets the Coral Sea, it is one of the few places on the planet where rainforest ecosystems change so abruptly to a marine environment such as the Great Barrier Reef.
