While it looks to be on the ocean in the wider view of the Perth Australian Travel Map, it is actually inland on a large, open stretch of water formed by the Swan River. Look to the left hand side (west) of the map to find the beachside suburb of Cottesloe where Perth meets the Indian Ocean. On this side of Australia the sun sets into the ocean.

Getting to Perth

Five hours flying will get you from Sydney to Perth. The time difference is three hours. It is very much the same distance as from New York to Los Angeles, Portugal to Turkey, or Delhi to Hong Kong. Regular services run from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. Perth is often a destination in its own right from Asian countries or Europe since many International flights terminate there.

The Indian Pacific Rail Service is considered one of the great train journeys of the world, and if you are collecting such journeys, the Perth to Sydney (or vice versa) service takes three nights and three days. A shorter version covers the Nullabor Plain from Adelaide to Perth. Zoom out on the Perth Australian Travel Map until you can see both Adelaide and Perth.

Perth City: Growing at a fast pace, and with a population topping two million, Perth is an urban island in the wide expanse of Western Australia. It is where you will arrive before setting off on expeditions north to The Pinnacles, Kalbarri and Monkey Mia. South is the more temperate area of Margaret River and to the east, the red desert of the Nullabor Plain.

Fremantle: Fremantle is the port city for Perth and is on the coast where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean. For an interesting beach pub experience, it is hard to beat the Esplanade Hotel on the corner of Marine Terrace and Essex Streets in the historic part of Perth. Zoom in on the Perth Australian Travel Map, look for Fremantle to the left (west) and find where Essex Street meets Marine Terrace.

Rottnest Island: From Fremantle, zoom out on the Perth Australian Travel Map and look left (west) into the Indian Ocean for the intriguing Rottnest Island. Regular ferries leave both from the Terminal at Perth City and Fremantle for day trips to the Island. Accommodation on Rottnest is also available. Look for options by following the hotels link below and clicking on the Rottnest Island region in the sidebar.
