Melbourne City – Self Guided Walks.
Melbourne is a wonderful city to explore on foot, a city that is easy to navigate and which has excellent public transport services. In these walks we will use Melbourne’s trams (streetcars) and taxis (cabs) to cover longer distances and will cover the rest of the ground on foot.

Each of the excursions starts and ends in the geographical heart of the city … at the corner Flinders and Swanston Streets, opposite the Flinders St Railway Station. Our confirmed itinerary will give you details on how to catch the trams (streetcars) and taxis to get around like the locals.

Self Guided Walk – Chinatown, Museums, Italian Quarter, Markets, Swanston Street, The Shrine and the Arts Centre.
Time required approximately 6 hours at an easy pace.  From the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets (this is the corner near the Bridge over the Yarra River and is directly in front of the Flinders Street Railway Station) walk up Swanston Street to Little Bourke Street. (You will notice that there is Bourke Street Street and  Little Bourke Street, Collins Street and Little Collins Street, etc. in this part of town).

Turn right and walk one block uphill along Little Bourke Street.  This is the heart of Melbourne’s China Town.  At Russell Street, turn left and walk along Russell Street, crossing Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale Streets.  Just past Little Lonsdale Street, the Victorian State Museum will be on your left. Continue up Russell Street for another block until you come to the Old Melbourne Jail on the left.  The building itself is most interesting, as are the exhibits relating to law enforcement in the 1800’s.  A total of 104 hangings took place in the Jail, including that of the famous bushranger (outlaw), Ned Kelly. The National Trust (National Estate) has preserved a block of the Jail, built in 1862, as a penal museum.

Lygon Street Italian Quarter Melbourne Sample Custom Itinerary Australia

Leaving the Jail, hail a Taxi and ask him to drive you up Lygon Street as far as Elgin Street (about a mile – should cost about $10.00).  From Elgin Street you stroll back down Lygon Street towards the City, enjoying the cosmopolitan flavor of this area of Melbourne.  Suggest lunch at any of the street cafes or restaurants along Lygon Street. After lunch stroll back down Lygon Street as far as Victoria Street. At Victoria Street, turn right and walk two blocks to Swanston Street.  At Swanston Street turn left and stroll downhill to the first Tram Stop that takes your fancy.

Catch any tram heading down hill and tell the ticket seller (the conductor) that you want to get off at the Shrine of Remembrance.  If he tells you that the Tram does not go that far (possible but extremely unlikely), merely get off at the next stop and catch the next Tram. You will travel down hill, crossing Bourke Street and then Princes Bridge over the River Yarra, and will travel along St Kilda Road, past the Victorian Arts Centre.  As you come to the Shrine of Remembrance (on your left on the hill), pick a stop and get off the tram.  Walk up the lawn to the Shrine.

The Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria’s memorial to those who served and died in WW1 & II, Korea, Malaya, Borneo & Vietnam.  It is worth remembering that there has never been a conflict involving the US and Australia where the two countries have fought with one another.  It is worth climbing the stairs to the lookout on the Shrine and visiting the vaults to see the tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Military memorabilia.

Leaving the Shrine, walk back towards the City, crossing the road and visiting the Victorian Arts Centre.  Guided tours are available Monday to Friday if you wish to look through. From the Arts Centre, stay on the left hand sidewalk, cross the Princes Bridge and walk past the Flinders Street Railway Station.

Cross Flinders Street. On the corner of Flinders and Swanson Streets is Young & Jackson’s Hotel, a famous watering hole for Melbournites.  If so inclined, you might like to drop in for a well earned beer or wine with the locals.  Leaving Young & Jackson’s, walk back to your Hotel.

Queen Victoria Market Melbourne Sample Custom Itinerary Australia

Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market.

For over a century, the collection of vast open-sided sheds and high roofed halls that is the Victoria Market has been a shopping mecca for the locals. Today, in an era where most shopping malls are indoor and air-conditioned, the Queen Victoria remains a real open air market, a link with the past and with shopping history. What continues to draw thousands of shoppers, locals and visitors alike, is the simple fact that you can buy just about anything at the market, and at prices that are just about the best in town. Directions and hours of operation will be in our confirmed itinerary.

Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Melbourne Sample Custom Itinerary Australia

Dinner On The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant.

Board the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant for dinner. The Tramcar covers a very scenic route around Central Melbourne and the experience of fine dining is one to be remembered. The meal is 5-Course and drinks are included.

This is a totally unique experience, and one that is not “touristy” at all…the quality of the food and its presentation are excellent (especially considering you are on a tramcar) and the wines offered are of a fine standard to complement the meal.
