From Islamabad to Canberra: an IT professional finds her place

I worked as an IT business analyst in Islamabad for six years before applying for Australian permanent residency. The decision was driven by a mix of professional ambition and a desire for stability. Pakistan's tech sector is growing, but the opportunities in Australia, particularly in government IT, were compelling.

My 189 visa application was a methodical process. I had my skills assessed through the ACS, which took about 10 weeks. My bachelor's degree in computer science and six years of experience gave me a positive assessment, but ACS deducted two years from my experience count, which is standard for ICT professionals.

The PTE Academic was crucial. I needed a high score to maximise my points. I studied for three months using online resources and practice tests, and scored 82 overall, which gave me the maximum English points. Combined with my age, qualifications, and experience, I had 80 points. My invitation came within two months of lodging my Expression of Interest.

I chose Canberra for a specific reason: the city has a massive government IT sector. The Department of Defence, Services Australia, the ATO, and dozens of other agencies are headquartered here, and they all need IT professionals. I also liked that Canberra is smaller and more manageable than Sydney or Melbourne.

Arriving in August, the heart of Canberra's winter, was bracing. Canberra is cold in ways that Islamabad is not. The city sits inland at 600 metres elevation, and winter mornings regularly drop below zero. I bought my first proper winter coat within a week.

I stayed in an Airbnb in Belconnen for two weeks while I searched for a rental. The rental market in Canberra is competitive but less extreme than Sydney. I found a one-bedroom apartment in Braddon, a trendy inner suburb with cafes and restaurants, which suited my lifestyle.

Job hunting was faster than I expected. I updated my LinkedIn profile, applied through government recruitment portals, and reached out to IT contracting agencies. Within four weeks, I had a contract role as a business analyst with a federal government department. Government IT work in Australia is heavily process-oriented, with agile methodologies, ITIL frameworks, and strict security protocols. The structure suited me.

The Pakistani community in Canberra is modest but active. There is a Pakistani Association that organises cultural events, and several mosques and halal restaurants. I also connected with a broader South Asian women's professional network, which provided both social support and career opportunities.

What surprised me about Canberra was how liveable it is. The city is planned and green. Lake Burley Griffin is beautiful. The national institutions like the War Memorial and National Gallery are free and world-class. Weekend drives to the coast (Batemans Bay is about two hours away) became a regular activity.

The misconceptions about Canberra are frustrating. People in Sydney and Melbourne joke about it being boring, but they are wrong. It is quieter, yes, but the quality of life is excellent. Salaries are among the highest in Australia. Traffic is minimal. Housing is more affordable than Sydney. And the professional opportunities in government IT are unmatched.

What I wish I had prepared for: the social adjustment. Canberra is transient. Many people come on short-term government contracts and leave. Building lasting friendships requires effort. I joined a book club, a hiking group, and started volunteering at a community tutoring program. Those connections took months to develop but became the foundation of my social life.

Three years in, I am now a permanent employee in the public service, earning a salary that would have been unthinkable in Islamabad. I recently bought a townhouse in Gungahlin. Canberra was not my first choice, but it became my home.
